How Do We Generate Funds for Service?
The West Bowie County Rotary club hosts one main fundraiser each year and receives a grant from Waste Management for picking up trash along State Highway 8 just south of New Boston, Texas. The money that we receive funds our yearly service projects for West Bowie County including scholarships for high-school seniors, leadership training for high-school juniors, dictionaries for all 3rd grade students in West Bowie County, and a charitable Christmas project for needy families.
Half Marathon Race – Run the Rails
October is the month that the West Bowie Country Rotary Club hosts a half-marathon race from DeKalb, Texas to New Boston, Texas. This is our major fundraiser each year. The race course lies along the old railroad line that ran parallel to U.S. Highway 82 in North Texas. In the late 1990s, the railroads owning these lines opened them up to the public under the 1983 National Trails Act. These lines were later formed into the Northeast Texas Trail. Our race runs along the last miles of this trail that terminates in New Boston, Texas. For more information about our race, see our Run the Rails page.
Waste Management Grant
Each year we receive a $1000.00 grant from Waste Management for sponsoring a trash pickup along State Highway 8 south of New Boston, Texas. This two-mile stretch of highway begins at the U.S. 82 bridge and ends just past FM 1840. We pick up trash along this stretch of road once every quarter of the year. Mike Farris is the lead coordinator for this project.
